The bugman

I've been noticing an increasing number of references on social media to "bugmen". I didn't know what the term was referring to, so I looked it up and found a wonderful description by Adam Winfield, titled "On the infestation of small-souled bugmen".

It's too uniformly good to pull out a quote to highlight, so I suggest you click the link and read the whole thing. If I really had to summarise it, I'd say it has to do with the cost to the human personality of trying to adapt to the corporate and technocratic side of liberal modernity

  1. I've had the displeasure of working with a number of bugmen, and a decade ago I was one myself, of the sportsball variety.

When people are denied a culture, they gravitate towards consumerist fandoms. The bugman phenomenon is remarkable in that it occurs across racial lines.

  2. The Bugman and many other right-wing memes originated at My Posting Career (MPC). The proprietor there calls himself "PleasureMan."

  3. Mark,

I think you'd enjoy unpacking this left-liberalism on immigration. A welcome sentiment to be emerging from the left, but still odious. Even when liberals make Auster's unprincipled exception, they still don't provide the answers to social instability.

    1. Yes, thanks. It's interesting as one of the first signs of Western liberals actually not responding by doubling down, but seeking instead to draw back a bit. It's smart from their side - a bit of self-correction in the pace of what they're doing - but I'd have to see more evidence of this attitude becoming more widespread among those on the left before taking it really seriously.

As you note, it is all still odious - it is all still based on dissolving traditional Western communities. It is useful, though, I suppose as evidence that even liberals themselves are not entirely happy with the effects of their own policies and that they are aware of popular discontent and a shifting of the political landscape due to the effects of these policies.
