I hear CPAC, an ostensibly conservative organization, is allowing a homosexual rights organization come to their conference. 'Conservative values are universal,' their apologists might say. For some reason, they disallowed an atheist organization, as if the lispy cause was somehow less damaging and inherently un-conservative than theirs. And then you have 'The American Conservative' magazine, about as properly named Norman Lear's 'People for the American Way.' <br /><br />Liberalism and Libertarianism (or right-liberalism) eventually universalize themselves out of existence, be it immigration, politics, religion, literature, etc etc.Kansasnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6832901.post-46749604305895177742014-03-06T07:29:36.440+11:002014-03-06T07:29:36.440+11:00I'm not so sure. If you define your country in...I'm not so sure. If you define your country in terms of a shared ethnic and cultural identity, it doesn't matter whether you're liberal, conservative, or socialist. If you define your country in terms of civic nationalism, you're more likely to insist on a shared ideology. My impression is that globalization has made us less free in the realm of ideas, perhaps because a globalized society is so prone to instability that ideas have to be controlled, just as we have to control the flow of information during times of war.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6832901.post-63763075217581856142014-03-06T02:23:31.648+11:002014-03-06T02:23:31.648+11:00"(Another thought occurs to me: if you are ai..."(Another thought occurs to me: if you are aiming at "moral freedom" then you might find renouncing particular allegiances an appealing move, as a duty to humanity in general is much more open and non-specific that the particular duties we have to family, tribe, church and nation.)"<br /><br />In other words is easier to rationalize whatever you want when your in a global cosmopolitan haze.asdfnoreply@blogger.com
